Canada, renowned for its esteemed educational institutions and diverse society, has announced crucial updates to better safeguard the experiences of international students. The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, disclosed these changes aimed at enhancing financial preparedness and overall support for students pursuing education in Canada.

Commencing January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living financial requirement for study permit applicants will undergo a significant adjustment. Previously stagnant since the early 2000s at $10,000 for a single applicant, the new threshold will now be set at $20,635, representing 75% of the low-income cut-off (LICO). This change, applicable to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024, aims to align financial prerequisites with the evolving cost of living.

Recognizing the challenges faced by international students, especially regarding housing, the government emphasizes the importance of ensuring students arrive adequately prepared for their Canadian academic journey. Furthermore, in collaboration with partners, targeted pilots will be implemented in 2024 to explore innovative ideas to assist underrepresented cohorts of international students.

In conjunction with these changes, the government is reinforcing its commitment to quality education through the development of a new framework for learning institutions. This framework will assess and recognize institutions that provide top-quality services and support, including housing options, to international students. Learning institutions are expected to align their admission numbers with the support services they can adequately provide.

Anticipating the September 2024 semester, the government is prepared to take necessary measures, including visa limitations, to ensure designated learning institutions offer sufficient support as part of the academic experience. Collaboration with provincial and territorial governments, learning institutions, and other education stakeholders is deemed imperative for the success of international students in Canada.
