- According to IRCC, you don't need a study permit for a program of 6 months or less.
- You still need a visitor visa or an eTA to enter Canada, depending on your passport.
- Rules change: always check the official IRCC website before you apply.
The 6-month rule
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), you don't need a study permit if your program in Canada lasts 6 months or less. BLI's language programs in Canada last from 2 weeks up to 6 months.
What you still need to enter Canada
Even without a study permit, you need permission to travel to Canada. Depending on your citizenship and travel history, that is a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). IRCC has an online tool that tells you which one you need.
Documents to prepare
Keep your BLI letter of acceptance, proof of payment, your accommodation details, your return ticket and your medical insurance with you when you travel. They help answer the questions of the border officer.
If you want to stay longer
Longer programs or plans to continue at a college follow different rules. Talk to us before you apply: our admissions team will guide you to the right option.
Who can help
BLI doesn't process visas or give immigration advice. If you need help, we can refer you to an authorized immigration consultant who speaks your language.
The bottom line
For a language course of up to 6 months, a study permit is not required. Plan your visitor visa or eTA early, travel with your documents, and you are ready to start.
