The Test d’Évaluation de Français Canada is a general French test that determines the level of knowledge and skills in the oral and written understanding and expression of French.
The official TEF Canada certificate indicates the distribution of scores for each module taken along with detailed comments on the different skills and is recognized by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
TEF Canada consists of 4 modules. Each module can be taken independently.
If you are applying for citizenship, you will need both oral comprehension and oral expression at a B1 (intermediate) level.
If you are applying for permanent residence in Canada, all four modules of the exam are required.
Under no circumstances can BLI Québec be held responsible if you register for the wrong exam.
The candidate is responsible for selecting all the modules required.

Please contact us before registering to know the availability for the selected date, we have a limited capacity per test date. Places are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
The registration and payment of the registration fees must be made 2 weeks before the exam date.
You must read the registration conditions before registering. By signing the registration form, you accept these conditions.
Steps
Once you have confirmed the selected date is available
- Download and complete the TEF registration form. Click here to download
- Complete the online registration form and make the payment. (You will need to upload the Completed TEFAQ registration form and a copy of your passport or your permanent residence card.
All registrations are processed online
- Please check your choice of modules before registering as no fees are refundable.
- No changes will be allowed.
- Candidates must respect a one-month waiting period between exam dates. If this 30-day waiting period is not respected, the examination fee will be forfeited as there will be no refunds or changes.
After your registration
We will send you a confirmation letter by email. It is important to arrive at the centre 15 minutes before the time indicated in your letter. No late arrivals will be accepted.

The day of the exam
Please present yourself to the address/addresses indicated in your confirmation letter:
On the day of the exam, you must bring the following documents with you:
- The conformation letter of invitation sent by the centre
- A valid passport (or ID with picture and signature)
Please note that there may be waiting times on the day of the exam. Plan to spend a full day at the centre, from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, if necessary.
Compréhension Orale
- Duration: 40 minutes
- Computer based
- This module consists of 60 multiple choice questions.
- It will test your ability to understand spoken french in real-life situations like:
- conversations
- extracts from radio programs
- public announcements, etc.

Expression Orale
- Duration: 15 minutes
- This module consists of 2 Sections
- Section A: You will have to gather information and ask questions.
- Section B: You will have to present a document, asses, compare and convince your partner.
- It will test your ability to communicate in French in real-life situations through role-plays

Compréhension Écrite
- Duration: 60 minutes
- This module consists of 4 Sections with a total of 50 question
- Section A: Who, what, where when and why
- Section B: Understand details
- Section C: Understand the logic of a text
- Section D: Understand the general idea of a text
- It will test your ability to understand written texts in French

Expression Écrite
- Duration: 60 minutes
- This module consists of 2 Sections.
- Section A: Read the beginning of a press article and continue the article.
- Section B: Express your point of view and use arguments to defend it.
- It will test your ability to write texts in French
